Bloody Mary: How far is the myth true?
Whether you are an adult or still hitting the
first years of being a teenager, you have probably stumbled upon the story of
Bloody Mary at some point. Here we are going to see how the legend goes and if
there's a true story behind it.
The story of Bloody Mary is a frightening
one to say the least, and what's worst is that there are many variations of it.
The most popular one goes something like this. You go to the bathroom, turn off
the lights but you have a lit candle with you and say Bloody Mary three times
and a terrifying figure will appear. Now one of three things will happen,
either you will bleed your eyes out, she will rip your head off or scratch your
face, or she will take you inside the mirror with her. Each one is worse than
the other, to be honest.
There are many variations of the story. Some say
she was a witch who lived at the time of the Puritans and was related to the
infamous Salem Witch Trials. As witches were banned at the time, they lived in
cottages in the middle of the forest. According to the legend, at some point
many little girls started to disappear and their families never found them
again. Some few brave people even went to the witch's house, but she denied
ever seeing them, however it was noticeable that she had younger features and
somehow got more beautiful. Fast forward, while one day a little girl was
caught leaving her house in the middle of the night, it was found it was
actually the witch who was calling her and the woman was set to be burned.
Nonetheless, apparently, the witch casted a spell on the people right before
being burned for if anyone ever tried calling her name in front of a mirror,
she would avenge them somehow. Another version says that the people of that town killed Mary by making her bleed to death.
Another version states that Mary was
actually a little girl who got sick really bad and parents thought she was
dead. After burying her, her mother heard a scream coming from her grave but no
one
believed her. Later, they found bloody scratching marks on the inside of
the grave.
The truth behind who Bloody Mary really was, has never been revealed, and with so many cultures and story variations, one cannot really
know for sure. However, one thing is true, Bloody Mary did exist at some point in
time, some say she was the queen of England known as Mary Tudor who apparently
had what is called as a "ghost baby". Her sister- Queen Elizabeth I-
is said to have killed her for the throne. After that, somehow the name
"Bloody Mary" got attached to her. Who she really was remains unknown
till this day, but one thing is though, if she really was the queen of England,
then the story is more 'sad' than scary.
