The Vanishing Hitchhiker: How true is the story?

"The Vanishing Hitchhiker" or as sometimes referred to as "The Phantom Hitchhiker" is one of the
most famous urban legends that have existed. This story has many variations and it varies according to the location.

The legend goes that one day a couple were driving on the highway when they saw a girl on the side of the road. They stopped to ask if they could give her a ride and she agreed. She told the address to her house and then she stopped talking. The couple thought she fell fast asleep, so they didn't bother waking her up. However, when they reached their destination, they turned around to tell the girl but they found out she was gone, just vanished. They told the story to whoever was there and the man responded that she was his daughter and that she has died a few years back. The couple was astonished and they did not utter a word. After all, they found out the girl they gave a ride to was a ghost.

Another variation of the story states that the girl was picked up a few miles from the sea and the man who picked her up found her scarf in his car so he went to give it back, instead he found out that she has died due to a car accident. They think that her spirit will remain at an unrest till her killer is caught.

Whether the story is true or not is still unknown and modern science despite its advancement, has still not been able to prove whether this ghost is real or not. Nonetheless, this story has enough realism for people to believe that this story is true.
