Robin Hood: Real or Fictional?

Image
Was Robin Hood ever real? The whole world, and children specifically, know the story of Robin      Hood, even if it is just a name. What's more, he is genuin ely believed to be a real-life person, but is he?       According to the legends and myths, Robin Hood is a rebel who lived in the 14 th Century in England. An outlaw who is a knight-in-shining-armor for a lot of people. He is a good criminal who steals from the rich to give the poor, or whoever is in need. He was not alone, but he always had his companions with him, robbing those who are filthy rich and giving those who are really poor. The stories always show him and his companions as legendary heroes who seek justice in the world, and robbing was their method.         The reality tells a different story however. The only known and valid source of such character dates back to the 14 th Century to a series of English ballads in which he makes the only appearance. Nonetheless, despite the development of h

The Vanishing Hitchhiker: How true is the story?

Image
"The Vanishing Hitchhiker" or as sometimes referred to as "The Phantom Hitchhiker" is one of the most famous urban legends that have existed. This story has many variations and it varies according to the location.     The legend goes that one day a couple were driving on the highway when they saw a girl on the side of the road. They stopped to ask if they could give her a ride and she agreed. She told the address to her house and then she stopped talking. The couple thought she fell fast asleep, so they didn't bother waking her up. However, when they reached their destination, they turned around to tell the girl but they found out she was gone, just vanished. They told the story to whoever was there and the man responded that she was his daughter and that she has died a few years back. The couple was astonished and they did not utter a word. After all, they found out the girl they gave a ride to was a ghost.     Another variation of the story stat

When a Stranger Calls

Image
A lot of people, especially teenagers, have heard about this story. It is often referred to as "The Babysitter and the man upstairs", or like the 1979 or 2006 version of the film "When a Stranger Calls". This is like one of the most popular urban legends that has survived over many decades.       This story is about a babysitter and a couple of children, others say three. In this story, a married couple go out for dinner and leave the children with a babysitter, specifically a high school student. They tell the children are already asleep and she need not wake them up. A short while after they are gone, the phone rings but when she answers no one talks. This happens a couple of times, and she thinks it is her boyfriend that she has been waiting for a call from. But it is not him, because the next time she answers, a stranger says "Did you check on the children?" then hangs up. This happens again. Finally, she calls the police but they tell her as lo

Boogeyman Is Real

Image
Stories about monsters have been going on forever, especially those that speak of monsters under the bed. There is almost no child on earth that has not heard of this story at least once in their lives and got scared of it.      The myth about the "Boogeyman" goes under a lot of names. They go something along these lines: a monster hides under the bed to scare non-obedient children and make them behave themselves, or the other version, a patient has escaped a mental health institution and crawls at night and murders children.     Other myths exist all over the world under a lot of names. For instance, in Spain and Mexico, there is the myth of "El Coco". It is basically the same story about someone who takes away misbehaving children, or more specifically orphans and their misbehavior is pretty much refusing to go to sleep.  This was very famous in Spain during the 16 th and 17 th Centuries. Japan and Korea among other countries in the

City of the Caesers

Image
The hunt for mythical cities has been going on for ages, especially with the amount of mythical cities  that have come and gone without any hint of their existence but the stories told about them. The City of Caesers, also named "La Ciudad de los Cesares", is another one on the list of mythical cities.            According to the legend, this city is located somewhere between what is now Chile and Argentina, specifically Patagonia. It also hits the list of "cities of gold"😉 as it was known to be rich in gold and diamonds. Furthermore, its inhabitants are controversial in description, the range varies from European-features to giants. This city was very much believed to be true in the 16 th Century, but not today.        The first reference to the city goes back to 1528, from the Spanish man named Francisco Ceasar who went on an expedition in Argentina and stumbled upon the city there.  However, there are many variations of the story and it is hard t

Werewolves:Real or Not?

Image
Werewolves have been the subject of many films and stories since the 20 th century, when people  started thinking them as silly creatures that do not exist and just totally fiction. However, these stories had to start at some point somewhere. The word "Werewolf" itself is derived from an ancient old English word of "wer" meaning "man" and the wolf part. This story actually originated from an old Greek Mythology of a man, part wolf that feeds on human flesh.  The stories about these creatures have been around for ages, and every country in the world has some sort of an historical story about it. Werewolves or Lycanthropes have been around for ages, literally hundreds of years ago. The first known date to their existence was in the 1300s. One of the most famous stories about werewolves dates back to 1591, in Germany, when a town's people surrounded a large wolf and set their dogs upon it with sticks and spears, however surprisingly enough,

Atlantis: A city Wiped Overnight

Image
Atlantis is one of the most mythical lost cities ever known to mankind. Wherever you are in the world, you have probably heard about the story of the great city that disappeared overnight. So we are going to see what the myth says and what the truth actually is. Atlantis has first been introduced to history when Plato, a Greek writer and philosopher, wrote about  it. It is said that he has heard the story from his grandfather, and decided to write about it. Whether he added his own twists to it or not is still unknown. According to his story which was written almost 2,400 years ago, Atlantis was a city that existed almost 3,600 years ago. His story tells about a utopian city that was so powerful, wealthy and a trade center for the rest of the world. Its inhabitants were once moral, virtuous people. Long story short, those people had everything, the money, the power, the position, they controlled all the trade in the world, until that all changed. Apparently the Atlantea s, inh

Slit-mouthed Woman: Careful What You Answer!

Image
The slit-mouthed woman is a very common urban legend in Japan. It tells the story of a woman who kills people if they give her the wrong answer, or the right one, it doesn't really matter. At the end of  the day, your fate is doomed.  This urban legend tells the story of a woman, commonly named Kuchisake Onna. She is a very beautiful woman, however she wanders the streets and roads of Japan wearing a surgical mask. In most cases, that is not fearful at all, right? Wrong! because the trick comes right after she takes it off. Under that mask, you can see her face, slit from ear to ear like a huge wide smile, in a very creepy way, kind of like the Joker. According to the legend, this woman asks you if she is pretty while still wearing the mask, but before you get the chance to answer, she takes it off and asks "Am I pretty now?". That is when the real trick comes into play, if you answer "No", she will take out a pair of scissors, others say a knife

Bermuda Triangle, Mystery Unsolved

Image
The Bermuda triangle is more of a mystery than a myth. In fact, it is one of the greatest mysteries the    world has ever witnessed. There are many stories as to what happened in that spot of the earth, and what the reasons behind them are This story actually became popular in 1950 when a journalist in a newspaper wrote about this  mysterious triangle in the ocean that has some weird activity. In 1952, it started catching more eyes when another journalist wrote about Flight 19, one of the most famous disappearances in this area.  According to the story, in 1945 a navy team went on their trip, what they thought would be normal, however 1 hour and 45 minutes later, the plane called control that all of their 3 compasses went haywire and that they don't know where the "west" is anymore. Shortly after, the plane disappeared off the record, never to appear again. Funnily enough, another plane took off in search and rescue of said flight, but they too disappeared and h

"Ningen" mythical sea creature: real or make-believe?

Image
Urban myths and legends do not only happen on land; the great depths of the oceans carry far more than those ever known to mankind. One of the most mystic and bizarre urban legends is one about a  Ningen, a sea creature that, given its description, looks like humans. This mythical creature first made appearance in the 1990s, in Japan, when an individual of a "government whale research vessel" posted about it. According to the research, this creature rose up from the depths of the ocean at night for very few moments then submerged again.  The description of it goes something like this: 20-30 meters long, half human-like half mermaid-like creature, with legs and hands that have all five fingers. Also, very smooth skin.   In addition, according to the Japanese people, who are pretty much sure about seeing it, it  only appears at night specifically at 3 a.m. then disappears again, which makes it even harder to capture images of it. After that article, images

Mythical Egyptian City Resurfaces

Image
The ancient Egyptian City of Heracleion was, as the myth goes, famous for its wealth. It was considered to be the main trading center in Egypt almost 1200 years ago. However, one day-much like the city of Atlantis- it disappeared never to appear again.  The city probably got its fame in the present day due to how Heracleion was once a prosperous, thriving city before it was swallowed by the sea over a millennium ago. It was outstanding enough to be mentioned by the Greek writer Herodotus. Moreover, this city tells the amazing story of Helen of Troy- believed to be the most beautiful woman on earth at the time – and how they launched over a thousand ships headed to that exact city. Others say that the city was named after Hercules himself , after visiting the city. The infamous city is said to have been a great port for Egypt at the time, taking control of all the ships coming from Greece. In addition, this mythical city seemed to have the great temple of Amun, where an

Vampires: Are they really "Real"?

Image
Vampires are one of the most popular mythical creatures ever known. Thanks to "Dracula", people everywhere in the world believe they exist along with all the stories that tag along. But do they really  exist? The myths and legends of vampires started a long time ago. In Europe, when diseases like Tuberculosis were so fatal and before medicine had reached such a high level, when an epidemic came, people would go down like flies. No one would know why such diseases went viral so fast and how. That is when the myths started, stories go that if a person has just died of an epidemic, you had to dig up their grave and if their heart is still fresh, for fear of vampirism, you had to tear it out and burn the corpse. The most popular one of course is the story of "Dracula" of Romania, a fictional character who apparently used to live on blood and just over all a supernatural creature. That is what the novel says,  but have you ever considered where the story o

Bloody Mary: How far is the myth true?

Image
Whether you are an adult or still hitting the first years of being a teenager, you have probably stumbled upon the story of Bloody Mary at some point. Here we are going to see how the legend goes and if there's a true story behind it. The story of Bloody Mary is a frightening one to say the least, and what's worst is that there are many variations of it. The most popular one goes something like this. You go to the bathroom, turn off the lights but you have a lit candle with you and say Bloody Mary three times and a terrifying figure will appear. Now one of three things will happen, either you will bleed your eyes out, she will rip your head off or scratch your face, or she will take you inside the mirror with her. Each one is worse than  the other, to be honest. There are many variations of the story. Some say she was a witch who lived at the time of the Puritans and was related to the infamous Salem Witch Trials. As witches were banned at the time, they lived in c

El Dorado "City of Gold"

Image
There are many legends about lost cities in the world, each with its own unique feature. This one really speaks out, I mean how many cities are  there in the world that are made of gold?!😮😖 You may have heard about El Dorado, the city that is made of gold. So let's delve into this a bit more. The legend goes that some hundreds of years ago, specifically the 16 th Century in South America, Colombia. There was this man named El Dorado-the king of the Musica tribe. The story goes that this man was so wealthy he started covering himself in gold dust, jump into Lake Guatavita, then surface clean. A bunch of jewelry would be thrown with him in the lake as well, as an offering to the gods according to them. Somehow the word got to the Spanish people, and so the myth was born. The Spanish tried finding this city of gold, in which they found some gold in Lake Guatavita, but apparently it wasn't enough for them so they kept looking. For the next centuries, people from A
